The almost completed 'Maine Jump' mural.

Nearing the end of the mural project [ about a week to go ] and have to say it's been a lot of fun and a learning experience too. Painting on this scale is a real challenge and knowing when to detail and when not to is a constant consideration. Painting a mural of this size using an 1/8 th inch watercolor brush for much of the work takes about as long as you'd think it would !....Images posted here show the Joshua Chamberlain statue and bridge in Bangor [ civil war general and Medal of Honor recipient and 32nd Governor of Maine] Paul Bunyan statue [ rather absurd mythical giant lumberjack], Stephen King's residence in Bangor, Quoddy Head lighthouse [ easternmost point of the U.S.A and only candy striped one in Maine ]......check back for final pics in a week !

Moving right along with the mural. First half almost completed

Sunday, April 24, 2011

Due to delays with permitting and nit-picking by code enforcement in Bangor haven't worked on the mural for a week. From now on will be using Benjamin Moore Aura paint for all the work which will provide better coverage and reduce the need to second and third coat. New pics by the end of the week.

Finished drawing the image in pencil and now working on paint. Finding out that some of the images need more detail now that they are full size so working on fine tuning some of them.

Mural Project

Sprayed the sky color on the wall and started projecting the image outline. I am using my laptop and projecting the Illustrator image through a Toshiba TDP-TW90 projector. This allows much more flexibility and the ability to manipulate the image and hide or enhance sections of the image, adjusting line weight etc. as I work. Dividing up the wall into 10' sections and working on a section at a time. Hope to have the whole image drawn by the end of next week and then on to the painting. Stay tuned !!!

THE 'MAINE JUMP' MURAL PROJECT

THE MAINE JUMP MURAL PROJECT
I have been commissioned to design the interior and paint a mural for 'The Maine Jump' in Bangor, Maine. 'The Maine Jump' is a kid's playspace featuring bounce castles, slides and other play areas, a private function room and food service areas. The mural will be 120' x 10' [ 1200 sq. ft if you prefer] and will feature aspects of life in Maine - scenic locations, landmarks, sport and leisure activities, industry, wildlife, famous Mainers and other aspects of life in Maine. The mural will be rendered in a graphic style using 1930's travel posters as inspiration. Working with jpeg images in Adobe Illustrator, creating outlines which will later be projected onto the wall and painted. Follow the progress of the project on this blog and feel free to comment. Shown here are a couple of the images I am working on.
